Sandridge Program
The Sandridge Program is a specialist homelessness service principally funded by the Supported Accommodation & Assistance Program ( SAAP), with additional funds provided through Psychiatric Disability Support Services In recognition of the emerging mental health issues young people accessing Sandridge services maybe experiencing.
What Sandridge does
Sandridge is a program providing three streams of transitional accommodation and support for young people aged between 18 - 25, who are homeless and have experienced significant trauma, abuse or neglect.
The program includes:
- Sandridge House – a twenty-four hour staffed residential service in Clifton Hill. Residents generally stay 9-12 months.
- Sandridge Outreach – a block of ten single bedroom flats in Northcote where young people receive outreach support, and residents stay up to 12 months. Rent is set by the Transitional Housing Manager (SHL) at 25% of a young person’s income.
- Sandridge Community Outreach – support to young people experiencing homelessness in the Northern suburbs or support to consolidate the establishment of long term housing.
Program Approach
The aim of the program is to provide an integrated response to homelessness. This is achieved by providing or securing safe, stable accommodation which will “hold” the young person for a significant period, while supporting young people to explore and extend their life choices, build living & life skills, manage crisis, cultivate resilience and develop their ability to take up sustainable long-term living. A strong emphasis is placed on a young person taking responsibility for their actions and decisions that affect their progress through the program.
The program operates from a social development model which emphasizes that in developing trusting relationships and effective interpersonal skills with both peers and adults, a young person is more able to move beyond the effects of earlier trauma and neglect and is more likely to be successful in taking up sustainable independent living
This work is supported at the individual and group level, where young people are encouraged to explore alternatives to self harming behaviors and develop strategies for managing stressful situations.
