Be Street

Working together with young people recovering from mental illness

What Be Street does
The Be Street program involves work with young people who have a mental illness. It is a recovery based program to help young people on their journey of recovery and to pursue their own life goals. Each young person is allocated a key-worker and together they work on achieving the self determined life goals of the young person.

Be St also offers an outreach service for 12 young people, 18 – 24, who have the skills to live in the community with outreach support. Accommodation is provided in subsidised housing and support as well as for people who live in their own home.

Who can live at Be Street
The program is designed for young people 16 to 24 years from the Eastern Metropolitan Region who wish to stay connected with their local community.

Where
Be Street comprises four units in a residential area of Box Hill. Young people can live at Be Street for up to 2-years.

What the program aims to do
With a strong emphasis on the individual, Be Street aims to facilitate personal growth, improve quality of life and ultimately nurture hope for a more positive future for the young people. There is a semi-structured program including community involvement as well as a focus on getting young people linked into the community through education and employment.

How to access the program
Most young people come to Be Street by being referred to the program by a Mental Health Service, a local GP, a family member or some other support service. Occasionally, young people refer themselves. On referral prospective residents complete an application form and participate in an assessment which includes a visit to Be Street. Staff members explain how the program operates and outline expectations before a young person moves in.
