Guy's Story

Narana

24-hour residential service for young people with mental health issues

What Narana does

Narana is a structured residential program that provides recovery focused psychosocial rehabilitation. The Narana service offers an individual rehabilitation program for young people who have experienced serious mental illness. The program is staffed 24-hours a day. Narana caters for individuals with a mental illness who may be at risk of homelessness, suicide, self harm and may also have coexisting alcohol and other drug issues.

Narana aims to facilitate growth, enhance relationships and improve the quality of life of its residents.

There is also an outreach program which offers on-going housing and support and home based outreach to 12 young people, 18 – 24, who have the skills to live in the community with outreach support.

Who can live at Narana

Narana is for young people 16 to 24 who come from suburbs within the Eastern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne.

Where

Narana is situated in a residential area of Wantirna South and consists of a small community of nine young people who can stay in the program for up to two years.

What the program aims to do

Residents at Narana are encouraged to participate and take ownership over decisions relating to the residential community, which provides the context for experiential learning and the development of independent living skills.

With both the residential service and the outreach program, Narana encourages people to express their uniqueness and individuality. Narana is about growth towards independence and enhancing self esteem for young people recovering from the effects of mental illness. The staff work in a holistic way towards positive personal outcomes for the young people, including linking them into the community through education and employment.

How to access the program

Referrals can be made to the program by self referral, family/friend, or via a health professional. After the referral there is an informal visit to Narana and a formal interview.
