Richmond Fellowship Victoria & South Australia becomes Mind

In November 2007 Richmond Fellowship Victoria & South Australia officially became Mind.

The decision to change the organisation’s name was made following careful consideration, taking into account the need to raise the profile of the organisation in the community in order to increase referrals, strengthen service delivery and broaden the organisation’s reach to people who need access to its services.

Mind was chosen as it better articulates the role of the organisation as a provider of mental health services and one that ‘minds’ or cares about people.

Richmond Fellowship is very proud of its reputation for delivering high quality services and for its commitment to consumer focussed services. As Mind these things will not change, client care will continue to be the first priority, services will not alter and the excellent level of support clients receive will continue.

The decision to change the organisation’s name involved extensive input from clients, staff and stakeholders, coupled with external market research. One of the most compelling reasons to change the name was that Richmond Fellowship conveys nothing meaningful about the organisation’s work in mental health and homelessness and often resulted in misconceptions about the organisation.

The organisation is of course proud of its history and values its relationship with Richmond Fellowships across the world. Mind has retained membership of the network of Richmond Fellowships internationally and particularly remain a member of Richmond Fellowship Australia.

Legally the organisation is still the same entity with the same Australian Business Number (ABN) simply with a different name. The legal name is “Mind Australia” but operates under the name “Mind” in both Victoria and South Australia.
