Sarah's Story

Southern Respite Services

A planned respite service that works with people who are recovering from mental illness, and their carers.

What Southern Respite Services does

Southern Respite Services supports the relationship between people with a mental illness and their carers by providing planned respite activities in the form of group holidays, individual support packages (in-home & community based) and recreational day activities.

Southern Respite Clients

Southern Respite Services provide respite to clients & carers residing within the Southern Metropolitan region of Melbourne, including the cities of Stonnington, Port Phillip, Glen Eira, Greater Dandenong, Bayside, Casey, Cardinia, Monash, Kingston, Frankston & the Mornington Peninsula. A carer is a family member or other significant support person to a person with mental illness living in the community who would benefit from a respite break. A client eligible for Southern Respite Services has a primary diagnosis of mental illness and is aged between 16-64.

Where

Southern Respite Services is located in in a residential area of Albert Park. Pre-holiday meetings are generally offsite. For individual respite sessions, staff generally meet clients at their homes, and then access the community.

What the program aims to do

Southern Respite Services aims to provide a break for carers to help sustain relationships with those they support. It also aims to link clients with mental illness into the life of their community and provide them with enjoyable and enriching experiences.

“Southern Respite Services has been a great support for my family & I.  It has provided socialization for my son and given him something to look forward to. Having the break rejuvenated me, and gave me the energy to keep going. I would highly recommend this to anyone & personally can’t wait for the next one”. (Carer Testimonial)

How to access the program

Enquiries can be made directly to the program. A referral form completed by a GP, Psychiatrist, Case Manager, or other relevant mental health professional is required - with client consent – prior to assessment, and then completion of a respite services application.
