Volunteers are an important part of Mind, and support the provision of many valuable services to Mind clients and carers. To become a volunteer you do not need specific skills or experience in mental health – we look for people who have compassion for those experiencing mental ill health and the time to give to make a difference.

Mind Australia has a number of volunteer programs. These programs assist Mind’s clients in their recovery journey and facilitate support for carers and families of people living with mental illness. Application for all Mind’s volunteer programs follows an electronic application through our website, as outlined below. Any vacancies in our volunteer programs will be advertised on our website and online. Prospective volunteers may also sign up for email alerts to be notified when a new volunteer position is listed.
Our application and selection process follows the following steps:
1. Search for volunteer positions that interest you and sign up for alerts
You can follow the link below to view all current volunteer vacancies at Mind Australia. Our volunteer opportunities are listed on our e-recruitment system, with information about the opportunity, application requirements, a volunteer position description and a contact person if you have further questions.
You can also sign up to get email alerts when a new volunteer position is added. Create an account on our e-recruitment system, then go to ‘Account Settings’. Here you will be able to select ‘Volunteer’ and save your settings. Every time we have a new volunteer position available, you will receive an email with a link to the position, which you can then apply for.
2. Apply for a volunteer position
Once you have found a position that you are interested in, use our e-recruitment system to apply online. As part of your application you will be asked to answer a number of questions, and upload your resume.
Our Talent Acquisition Officers will analyse your skills, experience and qualifications and compare them with the requirements of the volunteer position. You will be notified by the Talent Acquisition Officers if your application meets the criteria and if you will continue through the process.
The next step is a phone interview, then a face-to-face interview with the Volunteer Coordinator or relevant employee at the service which has offered the volunteer position. We will be looking at your potential fit with Mind’s culture as well as exploring your achievements and motivations. Throughout the process, we will be using behavioural-based interviewing techniques that will draw on your experiences and real examples from your professional and/or personal life.
Our team will conduct at least two reference checks from your previous/current employer and/or volunteering organisation to ensure that your potential fit with our culture is right, as well as exploring your suitability for the volunteering position.
5. Offer of volunteer position
The first thing we offer you is congratulations on reaching this stage. We welcome you to the Mind team and send you a link to our electronic onboarding system, where you will receive your volunteer agreement, as well as information about compliance requirements, including a National Police History Check and the relevant child-based screening check for your state (e.g. Working With Children Check (VIC/WA), Blue Card (QLD), Child-related Screening Check (SA)). You will also receive more information about your induction and training. Reaching this stage generally takes a number of weeks.
