Congratulations to One Door Mental Health’s Newcastle support group, who recently celebrated 35 years of connection, friendships and support.

The Newcastle Mental Health Support Group is a weekly peer-led group for people who have experienced mental health challenges in their life, as well as their families, carers and supporters. Participants take part in social activities designed to help people connect with others, make new friends and support mental health recovery.

“Over the years, the group has become an important part of the community, providing a welcoming space and organising so many great activities for its members,” One Door Support Groups Co-ordinator Troy Hooper said.

“The Newcastle Mental Health Support Group’s history is filled with special memories, from monthly meetings at the Joy Cummings Centre with guest speakers to fun outings and events that have brought people together.

“I also want to honour the hard work of past volunteers like Jenny Nichols, Jane Fairclough, Pat King, Val Cribbs, Grahame Steel, Denyse Jones and Kaz Francis, whose contributions have left a lasting impact on the group.”

One Door Executive Director Kathi Boorman said programs like the Newcastle Mental Health Support Group can help people experiencing mental health challenges develop and maintain meaningful connections.

“A big thanks to Troy for continuing to lead the group and for all his efforts to support mental health and wellbeing in the Hunter region. This milestone shows the dedication and care everyone has put in over the years – here’s to celebrating 35 years and many more to come,” she said.

The Newcastle Mental Health Support Group hosts a planning meeting open to the public on the third Monday of each month at the Mayfield Baptist Church (16 Highfield Street, Mayfield). For more information visit the One Door website.
