Mind Australia and The Haven Foundation Australia are pleased to announce the official opening of Haven Clearview – a new housing service providing long-term homes and support for South Australians living with mental health challenges.

Located in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, Haven Clearview includes 16 self-contained apartments, giving residents a safe and secure place to call home, along with on-site support from Mind Australia staff.

The service provides an important housing option for people aged 18 to 64 living with psychosocial disability who may need ongoing support to live independently. Residents have access to psychosocial disability support, secure long-term tenancies and shared community spaces where they can connect with others.

Haven Clearview also supports people who are leaving hospital and no longer need hospital-based care, but may still benefit from mental health support as they return to living in the community.

Haven Clearview was officially opened by the Minister for Health and Wellbeing of South Australia, the Honourable Blair Boyer MP, on Thursday 1 October.

“The opening of South Australia’s first Haven Foundation residence is a significant milestone for our state and an important addition to our mental health system,” he said.

“Having a safe and stable home is critical to recovery. By bringing this proven model to South Australia for the first time, we are improving pathways from hospital to home and helping ensure hospital beds remain available for South Australians who need acute care.”

At Haven Clearview, each one-bedroom apartment includes a kitchen, dining room, bathroom, built-in wardrobe and outdoor courtyard or balcony, alongside communal areas where residents can connect with others. The homes are located close to shops, services and other amenities, with rent linked to household income to help make them affordable.

Mind Australia CEO Denise Cumming said Haven Clearview was the first Haven Foundation residence to open outside Victoria, and the 16th residence overall.

“Haven Foundation residences provide people living with mental health challenges with safe, stable and long-term housing, alongside recovery focused support to help people live the lives they want,” Ms Cumming said.

“We know that having a safe and secure home with access support can make a significant difference to people’s health and wellbeing. Haven Clearview will provide South Australians with the stability, support and opportunity to build a fulfilling life in their own home and community.

“Mind and The Haven Foundation Australia commend the South Australian government for investing in this important model of housing and support, which recognises the vital connection between housing, health and wellbeing, and supporting people to transition from hospital into community.”

A recent evaluation of Haven Foundation residences found a 70% reduction in days in hospital for people after moving into a Haven Foundation residence.

There are currently 246 Haven Foundation residences across 16 locations in Victoria and South Australia, with additional residences currently being developed in Victoria and New South Wales.

Haven Clearview is funded by the South Australian Government through the SA Housing Trust and SA Health.
