Social isolation is often a real problem for the families, carers and supporters of people with mental health and/or substance use challenges, especially those living in remote areas.
That’s why Mind and our partners Grampians Community Health are excited to be bringing the Grampians Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect to the remote regional Victorian town of Nhill. We know it will make a huge difference for people in the Wimmera region who care for someone with mental health and/or substance use challenges.
Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect will be operating from 9 Clarence St, Nhill to provide people with the vital networks, connection and support they need to keep caring for their loved one while still looking after their own wellbeing.
Families, carers, kin and supporters of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Support is free and no referral is needed to access a Connect centre.
The staff at Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect have their own lived experience of supporting someone with mental health and/or substance use challenges. They can relate to your experience and provide informed advice and support if needed – or just listen over a cuppa.
Social isolation, burnout and financial pressures are common challenges for family members, carers and supporters. Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect can connect you to tailored information, resources, advocacy, counselling, individual and group-based support, and access to brokerage funds through Tandem’s Carer Support Fund.
Mind CEO Gill Callister said Mind is delighted that Grampians Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect service is now available to family members, carers and supporters in Nhill, thanks to our partners, Grampians Community Health.
“It’s so important that people who care for someone with mental health challenges and/or substance use issues have someone to turn to, especially in remote areas,” she said.
“The Connect support team are, or have been, carers themselves, so they know what people are going through and can provide the practical and emotional support carers need. We look forward to this service making a big difference in the lives of carers in the greater Nhill area.”
The new Nhill centre is linked to the existing Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect centre in Ballarat, which Mind delivers in partnership with Ballarat Community Health and Grampians Community Health. Victoria’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect centres are funded by the Victorian Government, following the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.
