Our multidisciplinary team includes peer practitioners and professionals who bring diverse skills, knowledge and lived experience. We listen to what matters to you and work alongside you to find the support that feels right for you. No referral or appointment is required.

About the Cairns Medicare Mental Health Centre

Medicare Mental Health Centres provide free short-to-medium-term care. They can also help connect you with ongoing or longer-term free or low-cost support that aligns with your needs and goals. They make it easier to navigate and choose the most suitable support options, whether that’s face-to-face, via telephone or telehealth, or online.

Medicare Mental Health Centres are staffed by a team of highly qualified mental health professionals and peer support workers with a lived or living experience of mental health challenges.

The service is proudly delivered by Mind Australia, and jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments, via the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN).

Mind has been providing mental health support services to the Cairns community since 2015. These services, which include the Cairns Community Care Unit, the Individual Recovery Support Program, the Group Based Recovery Support Program, the Step Up Step Down service, and the Crisis Support Space, can support people in Cairns at every point on their recovery journey. 

Who is the Cairns Medicare Mental Health Centre for?

The Cairns Medicare Mental Health Centre is available to anyone living in the Cairns and Hinterland region who would like support with their mental health or social and emotional wellbeing.

You may choose to access the Centre if you’re experiencing a difficult time, feeling distressed or overwhelmed, concerned about your mental health or wellbeing, or simply want to talk with someone about what you’re experiencing.

You don’t need to have a formal mental health diagnosis or know exactly what support you need before reaching out.

How do I access support from the Cairns Medicare Mental Health Centre?

Medicare Mental Health Centres are free for everyone who walks in or calls. You do not need a referral or an appointment. You can access services with or without a Medicare card, and you don’t need to be an Australian citizen to access support.
