Housing with support - Psychosocial residential rehabilitation - ARMADALE

Mind’s Armadale Psychosocial residential rehabilitation service providing people who have significant mental health and wellbeing concerns with accommodation for a limited time period (up to 24 months) and 24/7 NDIS funded support from onsite Mind Australia staff.

Our Psychosocial residential services provide safe, stable accommodation, in a supportive community environment, for people to focus on their recovery.

Residents support and learn from each other and have genuine co-design input into individual and group support sessions. Residents develop a greater understanding of their mental health, learn life skills like confidence and connection with others, and receive support with activities of daily living to continually build their capacity to live independently. We work with residents, their families, friends and carers to build a high quality, program of support tailored to their unique needs and NDIS plan goals.

About the residence

This residence located in the leafy suburb of Armadale – an inner suburb of Melbourne - is a beautiful Victorian building on an extensive garden block, complete with a vegetable garden and resident chickens. The residence is located close to High Street shops and public transport.

The large double storey house features 14 separate bedrooms (five downstairs, nine upstairs) and communal living spaces, including a large lounge room, large kitchen and smaller adjoining kitchen, large dining area and laundry.

The residence also features a communal relaxation room, art room, landline phone for resident use and multiple showers, bathrooms and toilets. The staff office area is located in a separate building a short walking distance to the house. All residents sign a Residential Tenancy Agreement with a registered Community Housing Agency.

Who is Psychosocial residential rehabilitation for?

Mind’s Armadale Psychosocial residential rehabilitation services are designed for people who have significant mental health and wellbeing concerns which have impacted their capacity to live independently.

This service is for people requiring psychosocial residential rehabilitation for a specific time period (up to 24 months), in a peer recovery community environment, with 24/7 support.

In most cases, residents fund their Psychosocial residential rehabilitation service via their NDIS package. Residents with NDIS packages that feature funding for Flexible Core -  Activities of Daily Living, or Supported Independent Living, plus Capacity Building, typically choose help with:

- better understanding their mental illness and developing strategies to manage mental health

- decision making, daily planning and budgeting

- engaging in a community with other peers who share common goals around recovery, acceptance and inclusivity

- developing meaningful connections in the broader community

- building skills for shopping and cooking for healthy eating

- written communication and filling in forms

- learning to maintain a household with tasks such as laundry and cleaning

- developing and maintaining connections with family and friends

- getting ready for the day and other personal care tasks

- building skills and capacity to live independently

Why choose Mind for Housing with support services?

We have been providing mental health and wellbeing support to people, and their families, friends and carers, for more than 45 years. Every individual's journey to a life of meaning and purpose is unique, which is why our services are flexible and offer genuine choice and control.

We work with residents and their families, friends and carers to build a high quality, program of support tailored to their unique needs and NDIS plan goals. Our qualified staff work in partnership with residents and their family, friends and carers to strengthen personal skills and build independence.

We promote a sense of community in our housing services to encourage residents to share and support each other, including taking part in group activities.

Some of our Housing staff are peer workers – people with lived experience of mental ill-health. Our peer workers lead skills-based peer learning workshops with residents among other work. We are a leading employer of people with lived experience, recognising their unique ability to connect with and motivate clients and guide recovery.

Mind is also working with the NDIA as a chosen provider to pilot a new home and living support approach for NDIS participants with a psychosocial disability. Find out more about the Home and Living Demonstration Project here
