The Bidi Wungen Kaat Centre in Perth has been nominated as a finalist in the annual WA Health Excellence Awards.

The service – also known as the St James Transitional Care Unit (TCU) – is a residential mental health service staffed by specialised mental health clinicians from East Metropolitan Health Service and Mind Australia peer practitioners.

The WA Health Excellence Awards are an opportunity to highlight the contributions made by organisations and services in the WA health system.

The Bidi Wungen Kaat Centre is a finalist in the Excellence in Mental Health category, which recognises projects that promote positive mental health and support people who experience mental health, alcohol and other drug issues to stay in the community, out of hospital and live a satisfying, hopeful and contributing life.

Mind General Manager Western Australia Operations Pradeep Satya says being named a WA Health Excellence Award finalist was well deserved recognition for Bidi Wungen Kaat staff.

“Both East Metropolitan Health and Mind staff have worked tirelessly to establish the centre since it opened in August 2022. I’m so pleased their efforts, and the wonderful outcomes they have helped people experiencing mental health challenges achieve, are being acknowledged,” he said.

“Together with East Metropolitan Health Service our full complement of trained peer practitioners are providing a much-needed alternative to hospitalisation for people experiencing psychological distress, and holistic wrap around support so they can access the help they need to recover and life fulfilling and independent lives in the community.”

The Bidi Wungen Kaat Centre is a community-based model of care with recovery-focused and person-centred service that accommodates up to 40 people experiencing mental health challenges.

It supports people aged between 18 to 64 years who are experiencing severe mental health challenges to work on their recovery goals, which typically includes being well enough to live independently, work or study, and become active participants in their communities.

Bidi Wungen Kaat provides two types of supportive care to suit the different needs of residents:

  • The Prevention and Recovery Unit provides short-term, targeted intensive support in a residential setting.
  • The Rehabilitation and Recovery Unit provides a longer duration of rehabilitation support in a residential setting.

The WA Health Excellence Award winners will be announced on 7 November 2024.
