People in East Gippsland are encouraged to learn more about their local mental health and wellbeing support services at a special community event this month.

The Omeo Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub (managed by Mind Australia), Royal Flying Doctors Service, Four Peaks Pastoral and Land Management Services and Benambra Neighbourhood House are partnering to host a screening of the Just a Farmer movie – a compelling Australian drama that portrays the impact of suicide on small rural communities.

Just a Farmer tells the story of a newly widowed mother who is left with the care of an alcoholic father-in-law and a failing farm. She is forced to forge a new path for her family all while struggling to pick up the pieces of her life.

The screening will include a panel discussion featuring Just a Farmer’s lead actress and producer Leila McDougall.

“Through this event we want to raise awareness about mental health, the issues affecting rural communities and highlight the strength of having deep and meaningful conversations in a relaxed environment,” Omeo Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub Lead Practitioner Donna Hall said.

“We know that there are limited support services available in regional and rural areas, so it’s important that people are aware of what is available, and how to reach out. This event aims to spotlight the fantastic range of services in East Gippsland, and representatives will be available to chat throughout the evening.”

The Omeo Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub, Royal Flying Doctors Service, Frontier Spaces, High Country and Benambra Country Women’s Association, headspace and Rural Financial Counselling Service will be attending the event held at the Benambra Recreation Reserve on Thursday 21 November from 5:30 pm.
