People experiencing mental health challenges in Perth can now access outreach support through Mind Australia’s Allied Health services.

Mind’s Allied Health services provide a broad range of technical, therapeutic and direct health services to improve a person’s mental health and wellbeing. These services include occupational therapy, psychology, counselling and social work.

Mind delivers these supports throughout Australia via telehealth, and via outreach services in Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and, now for the first time, in Perth (from Perth CBD to Joondalup).

One member of the team, Mind Senior Allied Health Clinician, registered psychologist and Perth local Joanne Hions is supporting people in Perth through a range of challenges including experiences with: relationship challenges, managing symptoms associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), self-harm and suicidal ideation, managing anxiety and depression, and overcoming isolation and social anxiety.

“I take a person-centred approach to my work, focussing on what a person has done in the past - what helped them, what didn’t work so well and trying to understand the type of treatment that might be most suitable for their situation,” Joanne said.

“I’m motivated by helping people and providing that bridge to help improve someone’s life. I have seen the huge changes that can happen just through listening, supporting and understanding.”

I’m motivated by helping people and providing that bridge to help improve someone’s life.
- Joanne Hions, Senior Allied Health Clinician, Mind Australia

As a psychologist, Joanne provides clinical assessments, evidence-based therapeutic interventions, diagnosis, expert consultation and specialist services like capacity building for people with complex mental health conditions and/or dual disability.

Joanne helps people experiencing mental health challenges to:

  • understand their mental health experiences and reduce their symptoms
  • gain coping strategies and mechanisms
  • improve personal relationships
  • access and connect with community, and
  • link with ongoing and longer-term support services.

Psychology support, and other Mind’s Allied Health service offerings, are generally for people over 18 years of age who have an NDIS package or relevant private health insurance policy to fund their support.

As part of a Mental Health Care Plan, Mind also offers focused psychological therapies that can be accessed with a referral from your GP. Our team of psychologists can support you with up to 10 sessions via online or telehealth platforms, with a gap fee charged.
