Mind Australia thanks Ashlee, a former Rockingham Step Up Step Down service user, for sharing her experience at the service and allowing us to share this open letter.
I am writing to share my experience with the Kwelena [Rockingham] Step Up Step Down service in Shoalwater and the positive impact this service has had on my life over the years.
I have accessed Kwelena multiple times, and on each occasion, I have received exceptional support in working towards my personal goals. This consistent level of care has played a significant role in my growth and development, contributing to the person I am today. Through this support, I have been able to overcome depression and continue building skills to regulate my emotions and manage my mental health more effectively.
As an Aboriginal woman, reaching out for support has been a significant and often challenging step for me. Having access to a culturally respectful and safe environment like Kwelena has been an essential part of my progress. It has allowed me to feel understood, supported, and comfortable in engaging with services that respect my background and lived experience.
Knowing that services like Kwelena exist within the community provides me with a strong sense of reassurance. It gives me confidence that when life becomes challenging, I have a safe and supportive place to return to. This has been instrumental in helping me seek support early, rather than reaching a point of crisis or requiring hospitalisation due to a lack of support.
From my experience, Kwelena fosters a genuinely safe and welcoming environment where residents can come together, support one another, and feel understood. Alongside peer support, the staff play a crucial role in creating this atmosphere. They are approachable, compassionate, and consistently willing to take the time to listen, offer guidance, and provide valuable perspectives on different situations.
What stands out most to me is the relatability of the staff. Many bring their own life experiences into their work, which allows for a deeper level of connection. This creates an environment free from judgment or criticism, where I feel comfortable, respected, and truly heard.
I am incredibly grateful for the support I have received through Kwelena. It has made a lasting difference in my life and continues to be an essential part of my ongoing mental health journey.
Kind regards,
Ashlee
